About this role

In this hourly, remote contractor role, you will work as a KiCad Specialist (SME) to create realistic, challenging computer-based tasks using KiCad and related PCB design workflows. You will design practical KiCad tasks, document them clearly in SuperAnnotate, ensure your setup supports the task, and record yourself executing the task on your computer.

Tasks may include creating schematics, placing components, assigning footprints, routing PCB traces, managing layers, checking design rules, generating Gerber files, editing symbols/footprints, organizing projects, or troubleshooting common PCB design issues. Your work will help train advanced AI models to better understand how real users complete electronic design and PCB layout workflows.

This role is with SME Careers, a fast-growing AI Data Services company and subsidiary of SuperAnnotate, delivering training data for many of the world’s largest AI companies and foundation-model labs. Your KiCad expertise directly helps improve the world’s premier AI models by teaching them how real users complete practical electronics, schematic capture, and PCB design workflows.

Responsibilities

  • Create realistic KiCad tasks: Come up with realistic and challenging tasks that can be executed on the computer using KiCad, then document the task clearly in SuperAnnotate.
  • Prepare the work environment: Ensure your setup supports the task, including having KiCad installed, project files prepared, component libraries available, schematic references ready, and any required assets prepared before recording.
  • Record task execution: Record yourself executing the KiCad task on your computer while following project instructions and ensuring the workflow is clear, complete, and realistic.
  • Document task context: Provide enough task context, steps, goals, circuit details, project files, component notes, and references so reviewers can understand what the task is and how it was completed.
  • Demonstrate practical software use: Complete workflows involving schematic capture, footprint assignment, PCB routing, layer setup, ERC/DRC checks, symbol/footprint editing, fabrication outputs, or troubleshooting where relevant.
  • Maintain submission quality: Review your recording and documentation before submission to ensure the task is complete, understandable, realistic, and aligned with project guidelines.

Requirements

  • Hands-on experience using KiCad for schematic design, PCB layout, footprints, routing, design-rule checks, Gerber export, or electronics design workflows.
  • English proficiency at B2 level or higher to understand project instructions, document tasks clearly, and communicate with the project team.
  • Comfortable using a computer, managing project files, installing/opening required programs, navigating engineering/design software, and recording workflows.
  • Ability to come up with realistic and challenging KiCad tasks that reflect actual electronics, PCB design, prototyping, engineering, repair, or hardware-development use cases.
  • Strong understanding of KiCad basics such as projects, schematic symbols, footprints, nets, PCB layers, routing, design rules, vias, zones, ERC/DRC checks, and fabrication outputs.
  • Ability to ensure your setup supports the task, including having KiCad installed, sample projects/components available, libraries configured, and any required references ready before recording.
  • High attention to detail when preparing the task, executing the workflow, and checking that the recording is complete, accurate, and understandable.
  • Reliable, self-directed, and able to deliver consistent quality in an hourly, remote contractor workflow across time zones.
  • Additional professional skills are appreciated, including electronics, electrical engineering, embedded systems, hardware prototyping, CAD, technical documentation, or other computer-based workflows.
