About this role
AfterQuery is seeking experienced Internal Auditors to complete realistic internal audit assignments end to end, used to train and evaluate AI models. In this remote, flexible contract role, you will request and review evidence, reconcile populations, test controls, document exceptions, and write findings memos with record-level support. You will also review audit tasks for accuracy, evidence sufficiency, expected answers, and grading criteria, including telling a confirmed control failure apart from missing evidence. The work runs 20 to 40 hours per week as an independent contractor. No prior AI experience is needed.
Responsibilities
- Independently complete realistic audit testing assignments end to end: request evidence, reconcile populations, test controls, and document exceptions.
- Build testing workbooks in Excel and write findings memos with record-level citations.
- Distinguish confirmed control failures from missing or insufficient evidence, and explain each conclusion.
- Review audit tasks for accuracy, evidence sufficiency, expected answers, and grading criteria.
Required qualifications
- 5+ years of hands-on internal audit or SOX controls testing that you executed yourself (in-house internal audit, SOX, or internal IT audit).
- Direct testing experience in at least one of: vendor management and payment approvals, payroll and compensation changes, or user access and termination controls.
- Strong Excel: working with 10,000+ row datasets, joining exports across systems, resolving duplicate identities, testing effective dates and approval limits, and building formula-driven workbooks that update when inputs change.
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Information Systems, or a related field.
- Available 20 to 40 hours per week.
Preferred qualifications
- CIA, CPA, or CISA certification.
- Coverage of more than one area: vendor and payments, payroll, and user access controls.
- SOX 404 / ICFR testing at a public company or bank, or in a risk advisory or SOX consulting practice where you did the testing yourself.
Why apply
- Competitive Compensation: $80 per hour as an independent contractor.
- Flexible Engagement: fully remote, 20 to 40 hours a week on your own schedule, and it can sit alongside a full-time role.
- Innovative Impact: work with a YC-backed startup and put real audit judgment into how AI models are trained and evaluated.
Competitive rates and genuinely expert-level work. Roles are project-based and specialised, so openings move fast.
